What would you like to publish?
Explore different types of publication. Choose a printing solution and adapt the size, paper and binding to your project.
Choose a solution for your publication
Compare binding methods and book types. Perfect Binding and Softcover Book are separate products that share a binding process; check the options for each.
Choose the inner paper
Compare the paper finish with your content. Papers and weights vary by product.
Matt coated
A surface with more subdued reflections for text and images.
Gloss coated
A glossy surface to highlight photographs and colour.
White uncoated
White uncoated paper for text and reference information.
Cream uncoated
A cream base for text-led publications and extended reading.
Size and orientation
Choose for readability and images. Check the size, orientation and spine area on your selected product.
Choose the cover and binding
Cover type alone does not define the binding method. Choose an option available for your product and check compatibility with the inner pages.
Soft cover
A flexible cover for books and publications. Compare cover paper and weight.
Soft cover with flaps
Where available, flaps provide space for introductions, biographies or publishing information.
Hard cover
A rigid cover with endpapers. Check the template and dimensions before preparing artwork.
Wire-O binding
Double metal loops hold the sheets together, allowing the publication to lie flat and the pages to fold back.
Metal staples
Folded sheets are joined with staples along the spine.
Singer stitching
The sheets are joined with a visible line of stitching, adding a decorative detail to the finish.
Dot-glued binding
The pages are joined with glue for a discreet binding without staples or rings.
Choose the lamination
Compare the appearance and feel of each lamination. Check the available options and paper compatibility for your chosen product.
Matte
A low-reflection film with a smooth, understated finish that adds protection to the print.
Glossy
A glossy film that enhances colours and adds protection to the printed surface.
Anti-scratch Matte
A matte finish with increased resistance to scratches and marks, suited to frequently handled materials.
Soft Touch
A matte film with a velvety feel, providing a smooth sensation and a premium finish.
Choose the special finish
Compare the visual effects of each finish. Check the available options and cover compatibility for your chosen product.
Spot UV
Gloss varnish applied only to selected elements, creating contrast and highlighting logos, text or details.
Gold Foil
Metallic gold foil applied to selected areas, creating a bright, elegant and premium finish.
Silver Foil
Metallic silver foil applied to selected areas, providing a bright, modern and sophisticated finish.

Edge printing: the design continues beyond the cover
Edge printing applies colour, patterns or images to the page edges — the surface formed by the thickness of the paper, visible when the book is closed. The artwork covers this area, making the edges a visual part of the publication.
It can extend the cover’s design concept, incorporate an illustration or add a distinctive detail to the closed book.
Available for the Hardback Book, Softcover Book, Sewn Binding and Perfect Binding (PUR).
Options for your publication
Check the services available in your chosen product’s configurator.

Samples and proofs
A physical sample lets you assess size, pagination, paper and binding; some special finishes may not be included. A colour proof is for checking colours only and does not include binding or final finishes. Check the scope of each option. Final production awaits your approval.
REPLACEFSC® certification
If you need an FSC®-certified publication, select this option where available. Including the FSC® logo on the printed item requires prior approval. Certification is not automatically included in every order.

Need a publication beyond the catalogue options?
Tell us the size, page count, quantity, paper and binding you need. If you need help with design or page layout, describe that too.
How to choose your catalogues, books and magazines
Understand your printing choices and check product specifications before preparing your files.
How do stapled, perfect, sewn and wire binding differ?
Staples join sheets along the fold; perfect binding fixes the inner pages to the spine with glue. Sewn binding joins folded sections with thread. Wire binding passes through punched sheets for convenient reference. Compare each with your publication’s volume and use.
Are Perfect Binding and Softcover Book the same product?
No. These are separate products sharing a binding process. Compare the sizes, papers and cover options in each configurator.
Should I choose a soft or hard cover?
A soft cover is flexible; a hard cover uses a rigid structure. Consider the intended use and presentation. Cover type and binding method are separate choices.
How do I count book or catalogue pages?
Each side is one page; a sheet has two sides. Include blank pages in your file and check whether the configurator requests a total including the cover or only the inner pages.
Must a stapled magazine have a multiple of four pages?
Folded sheets form groups of four pages. Plan your content accordingly and check the accepted totals and how the cover is counted. Review the template before adding pages.
Which paper should I choose for text and photographs?
Compare white or cream uncoated paper for text-led publications and matt or gloss coated paper for image-led content. Weight, handling and available product options also matter.
Can I print a black-and-white interior with a colour cover?
Products offering these options may allow different printing settings for the cover and interior. Check the configurator rather than assuming this combination is available for every item.
How do I calculate the spine width?
Spine width depends on page count, paper and binding. Use the measurement or template for your final configuration; do not reuse a spine from a book with different paper or pagination.
How should I prepare cover and interior PDFs?
Follow the product instructions and template for the cover, spine, endpapers and interior. Check whether separate files and single pages are required; do not impose spreads yourself.
When should I choose web offset printing?
Consider web offset products for volume distribution. Compare available sizes, papers, page counts and quantities; suitability depends on the specific job.
What does “Publication type” mean in the services section?
This field distinguishes commercial and editorial publications for VAT purposes; it does not refer to the binding type. Read the field’s help before selecting an option. The editorial option depends on the criteria applicable to the content and is subject to verification by Ask-to-Print; selecting it does not itself guarantee a reduced rate.
What is book edge printing?
It is colour or artwork printed on the page edges, visible when the book is closed. Check availability and artwork preparation instructions for your chosen product.
